UPDATE: According to a social media post, the victim is identified as Elizabeth Atkinson.
DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) -In what Daphne Police called a tragic accident, a woman was hit and killed by a vehicle on Highway 181 while she tried to retrieve some luggage which fell from her car. It happened around 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2024 near Rigsby Rd.
Daphne Police didn’t immediately identify the 46-year-old woman and don’t believe speeding, drugs or alcohol were involved in causing the accident.
“The driver had left…had just left overnight employment nearby and was headed to his home, northbound on 181,” said Captain Reginald Ardis with Daphne Police.
Officers were already in route to the scene at the time of the accident after getting a call about a woman in the roadway picking up clothes. Investigators said the unidentified victim had just left home with her two daughters and their two friends for a girls’ vacation.
“We believe the back hatch of the truck came open and a piece of luggage fell out and came open on the highway and scattered clothing which she stopped and tried to pick up, on foot along with another family member,” Ardis explained. “At some point during that time, she was hit by another vehicle.”
Those who live along Highway 181 where the accident happened said it was a heartbreaking scene and wish the family peace in their recovery.
“Thoughts and prayers and you know…it’s very tragic and sad to wake up to,” said homeowner, Ben Leinenger.
While police don’t believe there is anyone at fault, investigators will be reviewing the car’s Electronic Data Recorder which will tell them how fast the vehicle was traveling at the time.
