WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (WFSB) - A Connecticut man faces charges after airport security found a loaded gun in his carry-on luggage.
During the morning security screening on January 24th, TSA officers detected a firearm packed in carry-on luggage at Bradley International Airport.
Security officials notified Connecticut State Police, who responded, searched the luggage, and discovered a loaded handgun and 13 rounds of ammunition.
Following a period of questioning, state police charged a 57-year-old Connecticut man on state charges of circumventing security and carrying a firearm without a license.
“Our TSA officers continue to do a fantastic job preventing firearms from entering the secure area of the airport,” said William Csontos, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Connecticut. “Passengers who are traveling with firearms need to ensure they declare them with the airline and ensure they are properly packed in their checked baggage”.
The 57-year-old man remains unidentified.
It was the first firearm detected at a BDL security checkpoint this year and the first in New England. Last year, eight firearms were discovered at BDL security checkpoints.
Passengers can travel with firearms in checked baggage if they are unloaded, packed separately from ammunition in a locked hardback case, and declared at the airline check-in counter.
TSA has details on how to travel with a firearm on its website. Travelers should also contact their airline as they may have additional requirements for traveling with firearms and ammunition.
A typical first offense for carrying a loaded gun into a checkpoint is $3,000 and can go as high as $15,000 depending on any mitigating circumstances.
This applies to travelers with or without concealed gun carry permits because even though an individual may have a concealed carry permit, it does not allow a firearm to be carried onto an airplane.
