Cancelations, delays, lost luggage creates uproar at BNA - WSMV 4

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Cancelations, delays and lost luggage have become issues among travelers at the Nashville International Airport.

There are dozens of bags currently sitting at BNA, and airport employees have confirmed that they are a result of a combination of canceled and delayed flights over the past few days after the winter storm. This is just one of many issues that people have had to deal with recently.

“We’re pretty frustrated,” Andrienne Knestrick said.

And even that may be an understatement. Knestrick said she’s been trapped in Nashville for two days.

“The flight Just keeps getting delayed because of the plane getting iced in by another plane,” she said.

She’s just one of hundreds experiencing this nightmare.

“All the flights got canceled real quick all at once,” Austin Harrison said. “We were all just stuck.”

Harrison said inches of snow and ice canceled seven of his flights, leaving him trapped at BNA for more than 30 hours.

“There were dozens of us just hanging out in the airport like a slumber party, just getting as much sleep as we could on the floor and upright chairs,” Harrison said. “It was a rough night. I’m driving four hours north just to get out of here.”

Inside the airport isn’t the only place people have gotten stuck.

“I wake up and I thought we made it, four or five hours in, we didn’t take off at all,” Donte Vidaurri said. “We were on [the plane] for 11 and a half hours.”

Dozens of passengers spent hours on planes and then told to get off.

“It was a stair truck that they could have boarded up four hours after getting on the plane, but they got us off and we were on there for 11 and a half hours, it was uncomfortable, to say the least,” Vidaurri said.

American Airlines halted flights from landing at BNA for two hours to assist with de-icing planes. However, this caused delays. The airport stated that some flights were canceled or delayed because some airlines ran out of de-icing supplies and were understaffed. To make matters worse, all these cancelations resulted in many passengers losing their luggage.

“I’m frustrated with BNA, not upset with the airlines the ticket clerks are doing their best to make it through this bad situation, but BNA was totally unprepared for this,” Knestrick said.

Travelers said they just want this nightmare to end.

NES issued the following statement regarding alleged issues at the airport:

Safety is our top priority at Nashville International Airport® (BNA®), and winter conditions require heightened preparations to ensure safe travel. During these periods, we work with our airline partners to assure traveler safety with as few delays as possible.

Our Operations and Maintenance Teams have been preparing for weeks in anticipation of the winter weather. On Sunday morning, we activated our 24/7 snow operations center, which is responsible for responding to all operational issues, ensuring adequate inventory of airport supplies and staffing, and serving as a 24/7 center for airlines to report any emergency situations. The team hosts coordination meetings twice a day (6am/6pm) with airlines to discuss the daily operations plan and address any challenges during the winter weather event.

Unprecedented icy conditions impacted BNA on Monday, with over six inches of snowfall in a seven-hour period - significantly affecting operations and air travel throughout the day. BNA executed our winter weather plan that consisted of clearing and de-icing airport runways, taxiways, ramps, and all landside areas to ensure passenger safety.

Our airline partners are responsible for the management of their flights, including aircraft scheduling, aircraft parking, aircraft deicing, and safely boarding and deplaning passengers. The airlines are assigned specific gates for their operations.

Due to shortages in aircraft de-icing supplies and staffing of some of the airlines, some aircraft did not depart at their assigned gate on time and, therefore, did not have gate space available for their next arriving flight. BNA has 54 gates, fully rented, so when an aircraft remains parked at a gate past it’s scheduled departure time, there will be a delay when the next aircraft arrives that was scheduled to park at that gate.

We regret that many passengers experienced significant flight delays. We value our partners and our passengers and will continue to work together to ensure safe and efficient operations during all weather conditions.
