MADRID (TND) — Fourteen workers at one of Spain's main airports for tourists have been arrested after being suspected of stealing items from passengers' luggage, according to police.
Items worth almost 2 million euros ($2.2 million) and around 13,000 euros ($14,000) in cash were recovered from the group of employees, police reported. Another 20 airport employees are under investigation in the same case.
Police said the investigation began at Sur-Reina Sofia airport in Tenerife after there was an increase in the number of reports and complaints filed by travelers due to robberies and thefts inside their checked suitcases.
The thefts occurred as suitcases were being transferred to the plane's hold and loaded and unloaded at a slower pace, police noted. The workers could then open the luggage inside the hold and puncture the suitcase's zipper to open it.
"Once they had removed the objects they were interested in from inside, including jewelry, cell phones, watches, and electronic devices, they closed the zipper again to leave the suitcase without any signs of tampering," according to police.
Authorities were able to seize 29 luxury wristwatches, 120 items of jewelry, 22 high-end cellphones and other assorted electronic devices. Items were also sold online or in local stores, police believe.
