A well-heeled friend of mine has one rule for stylish travel: one should never use the shoulder strap on a weekend bag to lug it from A to B. Not only is it unseemly to have it shrugged over the shoulder, smacking against your thigh, but it ruins your jacket and looks rather freshman. Far better, he reasons, always to carry the bag in one hand, aping some of the most stylish 20th-century members of the first-class-lounge contingent, from Audrey Hepburn to the then Prince Charles by way of Naomi Campbell. This was an era when travelling meant dressing with a certain finesse. It was still an occasion, rather than an inconvenience.
With winter breaks on the horizon, and the annual decamping for Christmas not far off, the dusty weekend bags in the attic are due an outing. Styles have changed over the years – from sturdy structured varieties to sportier iterations for these athleisurewear times – but the basic requirements remain: strong handles, a degree of volume to carry all your kit, but light enough not to add extra heft on your arm.
There’s a degree of friction between style and substance with regards to a good carry-on (or carry-all) bag. Accessories have evolved into big business among the luxury conglomerates, and a trickle-down effect means weekend bags are designed to be seen as opposed to sit snugly in the boot. Flashy, branded varieties are all well and good, but there is a preciousness to them that doesn’t exactly translate as ‘hardy’.

Options from serious, nuts-and-bolts luggage and outdoors brands often fare better, and look authentic and smart. Take Bennett Winch, an independent British brand that specialises in discreet, practical bags, or Connolly, which makes luxury bags in sumptuous leathers. If your weekends are more ‘bracing winds in Penrith’ than ‘buffalo mozzarella in Portofino’, then a tough old synthetic number might be more up your street; outerwear brands such as Rains create lightweight weekend bags that will take a few knocks.
