CHICAGO — United States Customs agents have made a variety of discoveries when it comes to illegal materials airline passengers attempt to bring into the country, but one such bag search conducted last week at O’Hare International Airport may have been the G.O.A.T.
Literally.
The federal agency reported on Monday that two passengers arriving in Chicago from the Republic of Congo were stopped by customs agents after their luggage was found to include more than 15 pounds of goat parts, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said.
The two passengers, who were not identified, were told to report to U.S. Customs agriculture agents after their luggage was found to include one pound of unknown animal meat, two pounds of garden eggs, and 15 pounds of goat parts including the trachea, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and entire digestive system, the agency said in a news release.
Agriculture specialists seized and destroyed the prohibited items to keep livestock diseases and plant pests out of the United States, the agency said.
“There are real dangers these items can have if they are introduced in the U.S. economy,” LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, CBP Director, Field Operations-Chicago Field Office said in a news release. “All passengers, whether entering or returning to the U.S., must be truthful and declare all items they are bringing. If one prohibited item enters the U.S. it could have dangerous ecological or economical results.”
The discovery at O’Hare came in the same week that airport officials working in Minneapolis discovered a box containing giraffe fecal matter inside the luggage of a passenger.
“Items like these can harbor pests and diseases, if introduced into our agriculture systems or natural resources, could cause significant damage to our food supply or native species,” said Michael Pfeiffer, Area Port Director, Chicago. “Our agriculture specialists are dedicated to protecting these essential American resources from foreign pests and diseases.”
