Video Shows American Airlines Baggage Handlers Mishandling Passenger Bags - Simple Flying

Passengers heading from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Guadalajara Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla International Airport (GDL) videoed baggage handlers being rough with their luggage as it was loaded onto their Mexican-bound flight.

AA2313

Erika Cortes, whose family was traveling on AA2313 from Texas to Mexico on March 3rd, wasn't impressed with how her bags were treated, sharing it on Twitter and noting it was a ''This is deliberate and malicious destruction of personal property.'' American Airlines quickly responded within an hour on their social media, replying:

''Oh no, this is not what we expect from our team members. DM your parent's record locator so we can look further into this.''

There is no further information on if any valuables were damaged in the incident or if American Airlines has made any other inquiries into the incident.

A similar incident down under

As reported by Simple Flying in December last year, baggage handlers in Melbourne got caught in a similar act. A video uploaded by TikTok user RexRoss79 provided evidence of three baggage handlers at Melbourne Airport (MEL) who mishandled the luggage while unloading a Qantas luggage container. During the video, numerous bags are thrown carelessly, and at one point, a handler deliberately slams a bag onto the conveyor belt before laughing about it with his colleague.

All three handlers in the video were suspended immediately, with Qantas advising they would never work on another Qantas flight again. The three accused were employed by Swissport, which Qantas has subcontracted to provide ground services. Swissport acted quickly, sending this notification to all staff:

"Disrespectful behavior to our customer luggage and personal effects will not be tolerated and will result in serious disciplinary action. Rest assured this matter will be investigated with urgency with appropriate follow-up action. The unacceptable behavior of a few individuals will not go unchecked nor be allowed to tarnish the quality work of our whole team."

Bad weather in Dallas

Last week, travelers heading away on Southwest Airlines and American Airlines experienced 440 flights being canceled. Flights to/from Dallas Fort Worth from 17:00 on Thursday were canceled as bad weather was expected in the northern part of the state. According to FlightAware, Dallas-based American Airlines canceled up to 340 flights from its hub, which represents only a fraction of its usual 1,700.

Southwest, which cut around 100 flights from Dallas Love Field (DAL), had an airline spokesperson, Brian Parrish, explain their reasoning behind the cancellations:

“We are making some proactive afternoon/evening schedule modifications at DAL today due to an active weather pattern containing rain and thunderstorms.”

It is not yet clear how many passengers overall have been affected by the cancellations.
