Airport security officers found a high-powered, 84-mm caliber weapon designed to take out tanks in a Texas passenger's luggage on Monday, the Dallas Morning News reports.
According to a tweet from the Transportation Security Administration's Southwest Division, officers at the San Antonio International Airport discovered the weapon stowed in an outbound passenger's checked luggage. The division initially stated the item was not declared by the passenger, though a further update clarified that the firearm was declared but its presence was not made known to TSA agents after its declaration.
San Antonio police spokeswoman Jennifer Rodriguez told the Dallas Morning News that the passenger was on their way to a Las Vegas gun show to display the high-caliber tank destroyer.
According to the Morning News, The passenger provided paperwork that showed the rifle was “demilitarized.” A TSA explosives specialist also confirmed the gun would not fire. Still, a TSA supervisor decided the firearm would not be allowed onboard the aircraft, and the passenger’s family retrieved the weapon, the Morning News reported.

The gun is a shoulder-fired weapon called a Carl-Gustaf M4 recoilless rifle. It is designed to clear large obstacles, fire on enemies in buildings and to blow up tanks, according to Swedish military defense company (and former auto manufacturer) Saab.
The confiscation follows a record-setting year for gun confiscations at U.S. airports, with two Texas airports headlining the list of most firearms impounded. According to TSA data, officers took more than 6,400 guns from airport passengers during 2022—more than in any previous year. Eighty-eight percent of the guns confiscated were loaded, according to the agency. Houston's George Bush International Airport and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport were both in the top three travel hubs for most gun confiscations on the year.
