Airfares in 2022 are already the highest they’ve been in five years. But there is another, more insidious cost for traveling by sky this hectic summer: The price of lost luggage. According to a recent study, the average American said they'd paid more than $200 to make sure they weren't separated from their bags.
Recent data from the Department of Transportation revealed that nearly 220,000 bags were lost, damaged, delayed or stolen in April 2022 alone, which was more than double the 94,000 cases of mishandled luggage by U.S. airlines in April 2021. The surge of lost luggage has been driven largely by the increase of travelers this summer, paired with understaffed airlines unable to meet the demand while recovering from economic pandemic losses.
To prevent being part of this solemn statistic, worried travelers have taken matters into their own hands by avoiding checked-in luggage, opting for direct flights, attaching AirTags and other tracking devices to their goods, and purchasing baggage insurance.
But these preventative measures add up. According to new data released by Time2Play, a site that researches and publishes data about online gambling, 63.4% of travelers bought carry-on luggage to avoid checked bags, spending $103.69 on average for new travel gear. The same study of 1,000 Americans who'd traveled in the last year revealed that they were willing to shell out an extra $123.16 for a direct flight instead of a less expensive connecting flight solely to prevent lost luggage in the transfer. Yet many vacationers live far from an international airport that offers direct flights, and data shows that travelers are ready to drive 168 miles (2.8 hours) out of the way for a direct flight, spending around $26.06 in gas.
The extra cost of carry-on luggage, additional fees for a direct flight, and money spent on gas to get to airports with direct flights adds up to a staggering $252. Throw in baggage insurance (an average cost of $93) and a few AirTags (around $99 for a 4-pack) and the cost of mishandled luggage prevention jumps to over $400.
For those who can’t break the bank on pricey prevention, there are a few ways to reduce the risk of losing luggage: Attaching a sturdy luggage tag with clear identifying information to the outside and inside of bags, removing old airline tags and stickers from checked luggage, and getting to the airport earlier rather than later for scheduled flights. Storing all valuables, medications and a change of clothes in a carry-on or personal item instead of checked luggage will help lessen the burden of a mishandled bag if it occurs.
