SALT LAKE CITY — Police are searching for a man suspected to have twice stolen valuable luggage from baggage claim at the Salt Lake City International Airport.

On April 4 and again on May 18, two passengers reported their luggage was lost or stolen, Salt Lake police said in a statement.

Surveillance video shows a man stepping off the Utah Transit Authority TRAX train, walking to the baggage carousel, stealing the luggage, and then walking back out and boarding TRAX, police said.

Video from the second incident showed the same man appearing to take the passenger's bag.

"Because the value of each bag is greater than $1,500, these thefts are being investigated as felonies," police said in a statement.

Investigators released four surveillance photos of the man and noted that he has "several distinguishable tattoos." Police are asking anyone who recognizes him to call 801-799-3000 and reference case 22-802249.

To avoid theft of valuable items at the airport, Salt Lake police urge people to place carry-on eligible items in their carry-on baggage instead of checking them. Police also cautioned travelers to "reconsider" using luxury-brand luggage that could be an "allure to potential thieves."

Other tips for avoiding baggage theft, according to Salt Lake police:

  • Mark your checked luggage with stickers, tape, or ribbon, or consider purchasing a brightly colored suitcase.
  • Take a photo of what you pack, as that can be helpful during a police investigation and for insurance purposes.
  • Avoid delays after landing and head to the baggage claim area as soon as possible.
  • Label your baggage with your contact information, including a name and phone number.

Police urged those who believe someone has stolen their luggage to file reports with police, the airline and the Transportation Security Administration.

"The Salt Lake City Police Department Airport Division continues to conduct proactive operations to curb luggage theft from (Salt Lake City International Airport). Officers and detectives work closely with airline and airport staff to ensure the security of passenger luggage," police said.
