Man hacked airline Web site to locate his lost luggage after customer service was unhelpful - Boing Boing

After a flight on the low-cost IndiGo airline, Nandan Kumar, a 28-year-old software engineer, determined that another passenger had accidentally taken Kumar's bag from the baggage claim belt. (As the sign says, "Many bags look alike.") He found the passenger's PNR ("passenger name record" code) on their bag and called IndiGo to ask for contact information. The airline refused, citing privacy policies, and said they'd reach out to the passenger. Kumar didn't hear back so he took matters into his own hands. From the BBC:

He started digging into IndiGo's website using his co-passenger's PNR, in the hope of finding an address or a phone number.

He tried various methods – using the check-in process, by editing the booking and updating the contact. But none of it worked.

"After all failed attempts, my developer instinct kicked in and I pressed the F12 button on my computer keyboard and opened the developer console on the IndiGo website," Mr Kumar said. "I thought 'let me check the network logs'."

What he found was surprising – his co-passenger's phone number. "To be frank, I only checked for a phone number or an email. Basically anything I could use to get in touch to retrieve my bag."

He says, however, that the system's data should have been encrypted, adding that it allowed anyone to access private information.

"A PNR and a last name is very easy to get. People share their boarding passes. Anyone can see your bags, take a picture and later use it get your information," Mr Kumar says.

The two met and exchanged bags. A happy ending, indeed. And what did IndiGo have to say: They are ""reviewing this case in detail and would like to state that our IT processes are completely robust." Obviously.

Nissan Pathfinder Luggage Test | How much cargo space behind 3rd row? - Autoblog

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder has 16.6 cubic-feet of space behind its raised third row. That's basically the same as the Honda Pilot (16.5), a bit bigger than the Toyota Highlander (16.0) and a lot bigger than the Mazda CX-9, but a fair bit smaller than the Hyundai Palisade (18.0), Kia Telluride (21.0) and VW Atlas (20.6). All of those links go to their respective luggage tests.

Alright, so that's how the Pathfinder's cargo space compares to those on paper. You know the drill, here's what it is in terms of actual stuff.

You know, not a lot to report here. This at least looks like 16.6 cubic-feet of space when compared to all those other SUVs.

Two important notes, however.

Like others, the Pathfinder's third row reclines. You can see the recline range above. As always, I set the seat at an angle that seems comfortable enough for an average-sized adult or teenager to sit back there for some length of time.

Second, the Pathfinder has underfloor storage, as others do in the segment. Unlike the Telluride and Pilot, however, that underfloor storage doesn't really open things up enough to effectively expand the available space. It's more like a storage bin. It's also not as large as the Hyundai Palisade's similar underfloor bin, which similarly doesn't help in bag stacking. More on this later, though ...

As with every luggage test, I use two midsize roller suitcases that would need to be checked in at the airport (26 inches long, 16 wide, 11 deep), two roll-aboard suitcases that just barely fit in the overhead (24L x 15W x 10D), and one smaller roll-aboard that fits easily (23L x 15W x 10D). I also include my wife's fancy overnight bag just to spruce things up a bit (21L x 12W x 12D).

Here you go. This would be one of the large bags and all three carry-on bags. This is indeed better than the Highlander and CX-9 (neither can fit the bigger bag), but does fall short of the Palisade (it can swallow both big bags plus the two larger carry ons).

Ah, but there's something missing!

The under-floor bin is technically large enough to swallow the fancy bag. Sure, it's crushed at the corners, but what's inside would probably be OK, and if not this bag, the oft-featured blue bonus duffle bag also fits in here (forgot to take a picture). I suspect the Palisade also could've done this, but I tested that back in September 2019, so I don't know for sure.

What I do know, however, is that the Pilot and Telluride take better advantage of their underfloor storage. By lifting or removing their floors, you can swell their capacity. The Pilot can hold the same bags as the Pathfinder plus the un-squashed fancy bag and almost certainly a second duffle. The Telluride, meanwhile, can fit all five of the biggest bags plus some odds and ends.

Where does that leave us? Well, pretty much where the specs say they should be, with the exception of the Pilot. Its more functional under-floor storage does give it a leg up over the Pathfinder despite near equal specs.

Top 10 U.S. Airlines Least Likely To Lose Or Damage Your Luggage - TravelAwaits

It may not ruin a trip, but if an airline loses or damages luggage, it certainly creates an aggravation nobody wants. And if the luggage is lost or damaged, travelers — at the very least — may need to change or delay their itinerary.

While the odds of luggage being lost or damaged are relatively slim, it does happen. To avoid that situation, many travelers pack as much as they can in carry-on bags. Fortunately, you can also use the information in this new report to minimize the chance of losing your luggage or having it damaged by an airline.

The Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics compiles an annual report that tracks the number of bags that were mishandled — a category that includes checked bags that were “lost, damaged, delayed, and pilfered” — while they were in the airline’s possession for domestic nonstop passenger flights.

The 2021 Air Travel Consumer Report notes how many bags were handled by airlines, as well as how many were mishandled. It even breaks it down to the number of bags mishandled by an airline per 1,000 bags.

Let’s get right to it. Here are the top 10 U.S. airlines least likely to lose or damage your luggage:

10. PSA Airlines

4.78 Mishandled Bags Per 1,000 Bags

As a wholly-owned subsidiary, PSA provides regional service as part of American Airlines’ network throughout the midwest and eastern U.S. The airline operates more than 800 daily flights to nearly 100 destinations.

Out of 1,130,847 bags handled by PSA Airlines over the 12-month period reported, the airline mishandled 5,403 bags, or 4.78 bags out of 1,000, according to the 2021 Air Travel Consumer Report.

9. Southwest Airlines

4.62 Mishandled Bags Per 1,000 Bags

Southwest, which offered 168.9 million seats for sale in 2021, is the third-largest U.S. airline, according to Simple Flying. The airline, based in Dallas, operated more than 4,000 weekday departures among 121 airports and across 11 countries in 2021.

Southwest handled 8,917,967 bags over the reported 12-month period. Of those bags, 41,245 were mishandled, according to the 2021 Air Travel Consumer Report. That means 4.62 out of every 1,000 bags were mishandled.

8. SkyWest Airlines

4.51 Mishandled Bags Per 1,000 Bags

SkyWest Airlines partnered with United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and Alaska Airlines to carry more than 36 million passengers in 2021, according to the airline. The airline, which is headquartered in St. George, Utah, enables travelers to reach nearly 250 destinations throughout North America, connecting smaller airports with hubs in locations such as Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Phoenix.

SkyWest handled 2,481,721 bags over the 12-month period. The research found that 11,191 bags, or 4.51 out of 1,000 bags, were mishandled.

7. Spirit Airlines

4.21 Mishandled Bags Per 1,000 Bags

Spirit explains that it offers 500 daily flights to more than 67 destinations at “ultra low fares.” Those flights include locations in the U.S. as well as the Caribbean and Latin America. Based in Miramar, Florida, Spirit was the third-largest U.S. airline last year, offering 40.6 million seats, according to Simple Flying.

According to the research, Spirit handled 834,886 bags over the 12-month period that was studied. Of that number, 3,516 bags, or 4.21 per 1,000 bags, were mishandled.

6. Horizon Air

4.01 Mishandled Bags Per 1,000 Bags

Horizon Air was formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1981 to offer service between Seattle, Yakima, and Pasco, Washington. Today, Horizon, which is part of the Seattle-based Alaska Air Group holding company, serves more than 45 cities in Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Alberta and British Columbia, Canada.

Over the 12-month period, Horizon handled 368,597 bags. Of that number, the Air Travel Consumer Report notes that 1,477 bags were mishandled. This means that 4.01 bags out of 1,000 were mishandled.

5. JetBlue Airways

3.88 Mishandled Bags Per 1,000 Bags

Based in New York City, JetBlue was the seventh-largest U.S. airline by number of passengers in 2021, offering 40.4 million seats, according to Simple Flying. The airline serves more than 100 destinations across the U.S., Caribbean, and Latin America, principally flying out of hubs in New York City, Boston, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, Los Angeles, Orlando, and San Juan.

Over the course of 12 months, JetBlue handled 1,189,433 bags. The airline mishandled 4,613 bags during that time, or 3.88 bags out of 1,000, according to the Air Travel Consumer Report.

4. United Airlines

3.85 Mishandled Bags Per 1,000 Bags

United was the fourth-largest airline in the U.S. in 2021 — offering 140.6 million seats throughout the year, Simple Flying notes. The airline, which is based in Chicago, operates 3,118 flights each day to 252 U.S. cities as well as 80 international locations. Much of that traffic departs from hubs in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.

United handled 3,546,831 bags over the 12-month period reported. Of that number, 13,647 bags were mishandled, or 3.85 bags out of 1,000, according to the research.

3. Frontier Airlines

3.29 Mishandled Bags Per 1,000 Bags

Headquartered in Denver, Frontier explains that it is committed to “Low Fares Done Right” and that the company’s employees are “tireless in our efforts to save you money on your flights.” The airline serves approximately 120 destinations in the U.S., Canada, Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America.

Frontier handled 727,451 bags over the reported 12-month period. Of those bags, 2,391 were mishandled, according to the report. That means 3.29 out of 1,000 bags were mishandled.

2.  Hawaiian Airlines

2.17 Mishandled Bags Per 1,000 Bags

Hawaiian Airlines, which began operations in 1929, offers 180 flights each day to the Hawaiian Islands, 16 U.S. mainland cities, and 10 destinations throughout Asia and the Pacific. It was the 10th-largest U.S. airline in 2021, offering 10 million seats, according to Simple Flying.

According to the 2021 Air Travel Consumer Report, Hawaiian mishandled 882 bags over the 12-month period. Since the airline handled 405,902 bags in total, it mishandled 2.17 bags out of 1,000.

1. Allegiant Air

1.96 Mishandled Bags Per 1,000 Bags

Allegiant, which is based in Las Vegas, explains that it  “makes leisure travel affordable and convenient” while also offering “low-low fares.” The airline — which is the official airline of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders and is the naming rights partner for Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium — offers nonstop flights to locations throughout the U.S., as well as service to Canada and Mexico.

Allegiant is also the U.S. airline least likely to mishandle your luggage, according to the 2021 Air Travel Consumer Report. Over the 12-month period studied, Allegiant handled 446,862 bags and just 877 were mishandled. The airline only mishandled 1.96 bags out of 1,000.

Feds: Southfield heroin dealer hid drugs in luggage to fly it into Michigan, across US - FOX 2 Detroit

A Southfield man who authorities say sold drugs in Michigan and other states was sentenced to prison Tuesday.

Leron Liggins, 34, received a 10 ½ years prison sentence for his role in a drug conspiracy.

According to authorities, from 2015 to 2018, Higgins would conceal heroin in suitcases that would be flown into Michigan. He also paid other people to travel across the country with heroin in their luggage, so the drugs could be sold in other states.

"This defendant engaged in a conspiracy to distribute illicit drugs that endangered our neighborhoods  and ruined lives," said U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison. "I hope that a significant sentence like the one handed down in this case sends the clear message that our office and our law enforcement partners are committed to disrupting drug trafficking and prosecuting those who seek to profit by sending dangerous drugs into our communities."

An investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) led to Liggins' arrest.

"This sentencing should serve as a notice to would-be drug traffickers that DEA and our law enforcement partners will employ every resource to bring you to justice," said Acting Special Agent in Charge Kent R. Kleinschmidt. "Mr. Liggins has a demonstrated pattern of trading the suffering of others for his own personal gain and that pattern has come to an end."

Man Arrested at Newark Airport For Forgotten Gun In Hand Luggage - Simple Flying

Police arrested a Las Vegas man after Transportation Security Administration agents found a loaded handgun in his carry-on bag. Airport police apprehended the passenger at Newark International Airport on March 17th.

The handgun was spotted by TSA personnel monitoring the security checkpoint. The TSA agents alerted airport police, who then, in turn, arrested the passenger on weapons charges. The passenger in question claimed he forgot the gun was in his carry-on bag.

Thomas Carter, the TSA Federal Security Director for New York, said,

“If you own a firearm, you need to be aware of where it is. That’s simply part of being a responsible gun owner. He has been arrested, but he faces a stiff deferral financial penalty. It was a costly mistake to make”.

Penalties

Being found in possession of a firearm by TSA will result in fines and referral to local law enforcement for further investigation. The acceptable amount depends on what firearm or related item you are caught with. According to the TSA, unloaded firearms can land you with a fine of up to $2,475, while a loaded gun can land you a fine of up to $13,910. Both situations can also result in a criminal referral. Further penalties can also be imposed by local law enforcement.

Fines can even apply to passengers with a concealed carry permit as it does not allow for the firearm to be carried onto an aircraft.

Slip throughs

Although rare, there have been reports of passengers getting to their destination without realizing that their weapon was never confiscated by TSA agents. ABC News reported in 2010 that a businessman passing through security at Houston Airport boarded an international flight and, upon arriving at his destination, found his Glock pistol in his computer bag.

Federal agencies carry out a covert check of airport security by trying to see what they can get past airport security. While the exact results of these checks are a closely guarded secret, it has been reported that at Newark Airport, TSA screeners failed to detect weapons 20 out of 22 times.

It's not unheard of for handguns and other prohibited items to be found in passengers' luggage. Photo: Getty Images

Unusual Confiscations

In 2021 the TSA confiscated approximately 5,900 firearms, 86% of which were loaded. It’s not just firearms that the TSA has had to confiscate. The TSA has reported some of the more unusual catches their agents have had to confiscate. These items include a chainsaw at New Orleans International Airport, a meth burrito at Hobby International Airport in Texas, and Bear Spray at Design-Fort Walton Beach Airport.

Firearm possession laws vary by each state. Passengers should always check their carry-on before travel to ensure they have not inadvertently left a firearm inside. Travelers can also contact their airline should they have further questions about traveling with guns and ammunition.

TSA finds loaded handgun in traveler's luggage at Mitchell International Airport - TMJ4 News

MILWAUKEE — TSA found a loaded handgun in someone's luggage at Mitchell International Airport on Tuesday.

Officials noticed the gun during a routine x-ray screening and immediately contact the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. According to TSA, a deputy responded and confiscated the handgun which was loaded.

The passenger, who had a concealed carry license, was issued a citation.

TSA said this was the third firearm stopped at Mitchell International in the last two weeks, with one gun found on March 10 and another on March 12. It's the seventh found this year.

"We continue to urge passengers to leave their firearms at home, or pack them properly with their checked baggage when coming to the airport,” Wisconsin TSA Federal Security Director Mark Lendvay said. “Not doing so poses a grave safety risk to everyone in the checkpoint, not to mention an inconvenience to the passengers who are behind you in the screening line, trying to make their flights.”

If you attempt to bring a gun through security, TSA can impose civil penalties of up to $13,910 per violation, per person. A typical first offense is $4,100.

Passengers can travel with firearms in checked baggage if they are unloaded, packed separately from ammunition, and in a locked hardback case.

Which Airlines Are Most Likely To Lose or Damage Luggage? - TravelPulse

Among the many frustrations of air travel is ending up at your destination only to find that your luggage has been lost or damaged.

Well, now the lifestyle website Stacker has decided to rank the top, or, uh, bottom 10 airlines who are most likely to wreak havoc with your bags.

ADVERTISING

Here is what Stacker came up with, using data from the 2021 Air Travel Consumer Report. The data includes mishandled baggage totals per 1,000 items from October 2021, along with total bags handled. All of the numbers related to mishandled bags were self-reported by travelers.

Trending Now

Travel technology, man with airplane and laptop

10: Skywest Airlines

Number of mishandled bags per thousand: 4.51
11,191 bags lost or damaged out of 2,481,721 total bags handled

9: Southwest Airlines

8: PSA Airlines

5,403 bags lost or damaged out of 1,130,847 total bags handled

7: Endeavor Air

Number of mishandled bags per thousand: 4.82
4,860 bags lost or damaged out of 1,007,850 total bags handled

6: Republic Airways

4,726 bags lost or damaged out of 874,948 total bags handled

5: Mesa Airlines

Number of mishandled bags per thousand: 5.93
3,676 bags lost or damaged out of 619,525 total bags handled

4: Delta Air Lines

Number of mishandled bags per thousand: 5.95
33,967 bags lost or damaged out of 5,705,942 total bags handled

3: Alaska Airlines

Number of mishandled bags per thousand: 6.07
8,682 bags lost or damaged out of 1,430,197 total bags handled

2: Envoy Air

Number of mishandled bags per thousand: 7.71
6,401 bags lost or damaged out of 829,856 total bags handled

1: American Airlines

Number of mishandled bags per thousand: 7.94
43,035 bags lost or damaged out of 5,417,841 total bags handled

As you can see, 70 percent of the list is comprised of smaller, regional airlines. But even for the big carriers, with the amount of daily volume they produce, the numbers are encouraging.

Even for American, the odds of having a lost or damaged bag is less than one percent.

British Airways Passengers Met With More Luggage Chaos At Heathrow - Simple Flying

British Airways is once again drawing flak from passengers who didn’t get their luggage at London’s Heathrow Airport. Hundreds of passengers arriving at Heathrow had to wait for hours to get their luggage. Indeed, after a point, announcements were made at the airport saying no more bags would be delivered for the rest of the day. As a result, hundreds of passengers had to leave without receiving their belongings.

Passengers left disappointed despite BA’s apology

The airline issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience caused to its customers, but that didn’t stop frustrated individuals from venting on social media platforms. To add to the passengers’ misery, the British Airways website seemingly crashed, which left nowhere for people to file a baggage claim.

British Airways told Simple Flying,

“We’ve apologised to customers whose bags were delayed due to operational constraints. We know how frustrating this is, and our teams are working incredibly hard to return luggage as soon as possible.”

In addition to luggage problems, arriving and departing flights were also delayed for various reasons. Passengers on Twitter said the aircraft were forced to wait on the apron for extended periods due to an apparent shortage of ground crew.

One passenger took to Twitter, saying, “My wife I were on flight 557 from Rome to LHR Sat 19th and still don’t have our suitcase. My essential medication was in that bag. If I get sick as a result of BA’s incompetence they will have the biggest court case in history!”

Déjà vu

Both Heathrow Airport and British Airways are no strangers to severe luggage issues and flight delays in the recent past. In late February, British Airways suffered a major IT outage that pretty much paralyzed its entire operations. The carrier’s app, website, and internal IT systems went offline, which meant passengers could not check their flight status, and BA staff & pilots couldn’t perform their duties effectively.

A few days before the IT outage, Simple Flying reported on a similarly chaotic baggage situation at LHR. This time, the problems were caused by storm Eunice as handlers were struggling to keep up due to rough weather. Last month, the storm affected all airlines operating from the airport, but British Airways was the worst hit. The airline had to cancel 119 flights, while 156 others were experiencing significant delays.

Myriad of issues

Regardless of the airline, we all know delays and minor baggage issues are an everyday affair in the aviation industry. But hundreds of passengers asked to leave without their luggage despite waiting for hours at the airport cannot come under the usual scope of issues. Especially when major problems like yesterday’s are repeatedly occurring within a span of weeks.

According to The Independent, certain passengers had to wait nearly a week to get their belongings back after February’s luggage issue. Simple Flying hopes the waiting times are much shorter this time around.

What do you make of British Airways’ luggage debacle at Heathrow? Please, let us know your thoughts in the comments.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Traveling can be a stressful experience, especially when you lose your luggage.
