1. Material

There are two choices: soft-sided luggage and hard-sided luggage, and both have their own pros and cons. According to Consumer Reports, four-wheeled suitcases can spin 360 degrees, making them easy to maneuver, but two-wheelers are better for clearing sidewalks, curbs and other uneven surfaces. Whichever you go with, make sure the wheels roll smoothly and stay in place. Forgo the wheels if you need as much packable space as possible, or if you are taking your luggage on terrain that is rough, sandy or icy, as it will make them more difficult to manage.

3. Warranties

If you travel a lot, it makes sense to invest in luggage brands that come with the best manufacturer’s warranty, according to Consumer Reports. Additionally, check the warranty for specific requirements and exclusions. For instance, lifetime warranties often do not cover cosmetic damage, such as scuffs, stains, scratches, dents, and other “wear and tear” that doesn’t affect the bag’s functionality, according to CR.
