Two patents on “dual-access lock” technology for luggage cover an abstract idea and aren’t eligible for protection, the Federal Circuit ruled, upholding a win for Travel Sentry Inc. and various lock and luggage makers.
The patents belong to David Tropp, CEO of Safe Skies LLC. They cover a system which enables a traveler to lock their luggage, while still permitting it to be accessed by Transportation Security Administration agents with a master key.
Judge Eric Vitaliano in March 2021 said the underlying concept was as “old as the forgotten high school locker key” and found the patents invalid. The U.S. ...
