I'm not hip like other millennial travelers. I like to travel (I took an obvious break for about 18 months), but I'm not one of those people who has "40 countries and counting" in their social media bio. I don't even own an Away suitcase – but I did get a chance to review the lookalike brand, July.
You don't need to be a travel expert to know that Away has surged in popularity in the last few years. You also don't need to be an expert to tell that a July suitcase looks pretty similar to an Away suitcase. Lookalike or not, they've built the most lightweight suitcase I've ever owned.
What is July luggage?
July is one of the hottest months of the year in the U.S., but in Australia it's actually a winter month – and an up-and-coming luggage company. "We exist to bring better design and thinking around how we travel," their website says. "Born in Melbourne, Australia. We've taken an Aussie approach to luggage: tough to break, beautiful to look at."
July offers various luggage types (in a number of sizes) and accessories, including:
July luggage features
- 46L in volume
- Ejectable battery with USB-C
- Crush-proof German shell
- Integrated TSA lock
- Hidden laundry bag
- July Y-Strap compression system
- SilentMoveTM wheels
- Water-resistant and stain-proof nylon lining
- External dimensions including wheels 21" H x 14.5" W x 8" D
- Total linear dimensions 43.5" (approved to fit as a carry-on for all American and International standards)
July also offers a lifetime warranty on their luggage: You can give your new suitcase a 100-day trial and if you don't love it, you can return it for free, with free shipping across the U.S. and Canada.
July vs. Away
I started this article comparing July to Away in appearance – and sadly, that is all I can do, as I don't actually own an Away suitcase to review. However, despite the fact that the two brands look fairly similar, there are two differences:
July's Carry On suitcase automatically comes with a USB charger (that is removable), whereas it costs an extra $20 to have one added to the same size Away suitcase (which costs $225). That isn't a huge jump in price, but if you're spending $20 on a portable charger, I would not recommend spending it on an Away charger (no shade at Away, but there are better chargers out there than a luggage brand's). Instead, I'd recommend investing in an Anker portable charger. You can get one for anywhere between $10 and $50 on Amazon, depending on the Anker model). That will get you a faster, more reliable portable charger.
When it comes to size, Away is a little lighter but fits less than a July bag. The Away carry on of the same size and function is actually .3 lbs lighter, but only can fit 38.9 L, whereas the July suitcase can fit 46L.
July luggage review
There are four types of carry-on bags offered by July:
For my review, I tested out the regular ol' Carry On. The brand also sent over a Carry On Light, but I am a notorious over-packer and that was not a feasible size for me. I found it on the small size for any adult, actually – my 10-year-old goddaughter saw the bag and thought it was meant for her. She said it was the perfect size for a kid her age.
Before July, I was a pretty standard Samsonite gal. I used to always be team softside luggage because I overpack and I've been under the impression you could fit way more in a softside than a hardshell suitcase. This July carry on is my first foray into hardshell suitcases and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could stuff it to the brim.
July luggage pros
- Sleek and customizable
- Easy to use and organize
- Built-in USB charger
- Lightweight
July's design adheres to industry standards for carry-on bags, but it still looks very nice. It comes in an array of colors, with boring options like monochrome and navy and then limited-edition colors like rose quartz and moss green. You can personalize your luggage (normally $50, but that feature is free at the time of publishing) with your name or initials. You can choose the font, color, and location of where your personalization goes.
For something that is small, you can fit a whole lot in this carry-on. I utilized the zippered pocket for loose items that might shift more in transit, like my hair tools, shoes, and jewelry bag. There's a hidden pocket inside the suitcase that is great for stuffing small items (like socks) into. I found the Y-Strap compression system most useful for storage, as it helped me stuff my clothing into one half of the suitcase and keep it firmly in place. I was recently away for just four days, but I packed four changes of clothing, pajamas, my makeup bag, sneakers, two pairs of sandals (including my thick Merrell sandals), and a ton of hair tools, but I still had plenty of room for the souvenirs I brought back with me.
This carry on comes with an ejectable USB charger (July's carry on light does not, FYI). This is great if you're stuck in the terminal and don't want to be hunched over an outlet to charge your phone. It is easy enough to eject and put back in, since you'll need to remove this at the TSA security line and when boarding the plane, per TSA guidelines.
I like how lightweight this suitcase is because no matter how much I forced into it, it never got too heavy. On its own, the bag only weighs 7.4 lbs (honestly, it feels like much less when empty). I have virtually no upper body strength (honestly, a toddler could take me in a fistfight) but this suitcase was still easy to throw into and pull out of the overhead storage bins.
July luggage cons
- Expensive
$245 is not cheap. It is a quality bag, don't get me wrong – it is sturdy, reliable, and pretty nice looking – and the price is pretty on par with competitors like Away and Monos. Still, $245 is a hefty chunk of money for a suitcase.
As the carry on is new to me in only the last few months, I can't speak to if the price is because it will last me for many years to come or just because they're meeting other industry standards. I'll find out by 2022!
