Looking forward – Luggage-Point eyes expansion with a focus on sustainability and digitalisation - The Moodie Davitt Report - The Moodie Davitt Report

Airport service provider Luggage-Point is looking to extend its network in travel retail, with a focus on sustainability and an increased use of digital media.

Luggage-Point is a Silver Partner of the upcoming Virtual Travel Retail Expo where it will highlight plans to extend the digital side of the business through the development of virtual stores.

According to Luggage-Point Retail Services Director Graeme Stewart, the online stores will offer a 3-D tour of the company’s product line-up and its range of services. Customers will be able to pre-book, for example, luggage wrapping, and products will be tagged for online shopping, with links to airport sites.

Stewart said Luggage Point plans to offer a pre-departure buy-and-collect service and is intent on increasing the company’s use of digital and social media.

Physical stores will encourage digital interaction through the use of QR codes to offer customers full product details. In-store digital catalogues are also in the pipeline.

“As every retailer knows, storage space at airports is highly sought after and we believe digital catalogues could solve this problem and, at the same time, offer our customers a greater product range,” Stewart said.

Luggage-Point Retail Services Director Graeme Stewart is ready to highlight new services and units, including its latest at Luton Airport

Luggage-Point opened a new store at Luton Airport this month. Stewart pointed out that the temporary unit will be extended as the airport’s terminal redevelopment continues.

He emphasised that an increased use of digital tools will not change Luggage-Point’s family-based and customer-centric ethos.

“Luggage-Point is and will remain a family business which developed from a trip my parents made in Europe in 2004. They noted then a need for pre-check in weight checks at airports. Weigh-ahead kiosks were introduced in selected UK, Australian and New Zealand airports. Luggage-Point stores and services were a natural progression and introduced in 2012.”

The Luggage Point network includes stores in 11 UK airports, and in Australia and New Zealand. Services range from retailing and bag wrapping to left luggage and dry cleaning.

“We are family at the core of a business that actually cares about what is happening to our customers and how we can ensure their travelling is made easier,” Stewart said.

“Our staff approach customers with a ‘hi, where are you travelling today?’ question and tailor our products and services to their individual needs. Customer service is incredibly important to us and we are really proud of our Trustpilot reviews.”

Luggage Point launched Travel Safe Portable Hygiene kits and Protective Face Masks from its Enviro-Point subsidiary last year.

“Enviro-Point developed on the back of our bag wrap services,” Stewart said. “The wrap we use is 100% recyclable but, of course, some inevitably goes into bins and eventually landfill.”

Stewart describes himself as a “sustainability geek”. “It’s become my passion, a hobby, if you like, to ensure we can offer the best solutions possible to reducing the use of plastics in the industry.”

As reported, AGS Airports tested and introduced Enviro-Point sustainable security bags in airports in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Southampton last year.

By introducing the oxo-biodegradable version, AGS Airports aims to replace more than two million single-use plastic bags used each year across the group.

According to Luggage-Point, the bags degrade over a period of time – between 17 and 24 months – down to a natural biomass rather than the more damaging microplastics associated with single-use alternatives. Each bag can also be reused and recycled prior to the beginning of the degrading period.

Every year more than eight million tonnes of single use plastic ends up in oceans and seas and it can take up to 500 years for a single plastic bag to degrade.

Using Oxo-Biodegradable (d2w) in the normal manufacturing process of plastics accelerates the natural process of oxidation. Oxidation reduces the molecular weight of the polymer in a much shorter timescale, until it is no longer a plastic and can be gradually bio-assimilated by bacteria and fungi on land and in the ocean.

“We have a long and trusted relationship with AGS through our association via Luggage-Point and I was delighted to see the group become the first in the UK to provide oxo-biodegradable liquid bags within their airports,” Stewart said.

“Despite the current challenges facing the aviation industry, it is vital that we do not lose sight of environmental issues and as AGS has demonstrated, positive changes can be made.”
