Denver police said Sunday that a man died from injuries sustained when gunfire erupted in the early morning hours in Lower Downtown, just as area bars were closing.

Another five people were injured in the shooting, police said.

The incident occurred near 19th and Blake streets, the Denver Police Department said in an initial tweet posted at 2:15 a.m. Police at first said two victims suffered “serious injuries,” but an update on Sunday evening said a total of six people were injured by gunfire.

An adult man, who police said was among the victims, died of his injuries; his name has not been released. Among the other victims, two were reported to have “non-life-threatening injuries” and three suffered minor injuries.

Police said they had made no arrests.

The latest closing time for Denver bars is 2 a.m. It’s typical for LoDo streets to have a heavy police presence during late-night hours on weekends, as crowds head to the area. Sunday’s shooting was the latest violent incident to occur in the nightlife district, this time a block from Coors Field.

Several bystanders posted on Twitter that shots rang out as nearby sidewalks filled up with people heading home. At least one bar served as a shelter for bystanders after gunfire erupted outside.

Denver7 reported that an officer told the station that suspects also fired at police during the incident, but no officers were injured.

Police said the investigation was still underway and asked anyone with information to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867 (STOP).
