It happened fast in practice one Thursday but was clearly noticeable.
A black-shirted quarterback threw left, 15-yards down the field into a yet unfilled space. A redshirted defender made a quick reaction and put himself in a spot to make the interception. But right before the ball arrived, a white-shirted receiver, breaking back towards his quarterback, flashed in front of the defender, hauled in the catch, and broke up field.
The receiver had a red No. 6 painted on his jersey. Welcome back, Kody Case.
Coyote Nation is certainly aware of the impact Case can have on a game, but if your fandom is more recent or your memory a bit hazy, here is a quick refresher:
The headline Thursday wasn't just that Case was back on the field. He was on the field in a white jersey, which means he's free game for defenders to bump, grab, smack and wrap up. And he looked fantastic. No hobbles and showing the same speed that defenses are forced to account for.
"Today felt great," said Case. "It feels like I haven't played football in about three years now because I've been hurt, but it's definitely just fun to be out here running around with my teammates.
"Almost everyone knows me as 'black jersey', like don't contact Cody. But it feels good to be like everyone else now. It's a big confidence booster. It's 100 percent competitiveness. There's no taking it easy."
Case is just a junior eligibility wise though the 2021-22 academic year is his fifth at USD. He enters the fall 11 yards shy of 1,000 career yards. Only one active Coyote – tight end Brett Samson – has caught more touchdowns (10) and only Caleb Vander Esch (1,136) has more yards.
"I've worked a lot with our training and strength staff – Coach Caleb (Heim) and Coach Clete (McLeod) –and they've been such a big part of this. And Coach O (Phil Ockinga) getting me out here and telling me what to do. I feel great out here now so it's time to go."
Practices three and four are Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Coyote Nation is certainly aware of the impact Case can have on a game, but if your fandom is more recent or your memory a bit hazy, here is a quick refresher:
- Case caught six passes for 170 yards and two scores in his first two collegiate games as a Coyote
- He was USD's fourth-leading receiver that true freshman year, 2017, and went to the playoffs
- An injury slowed him down in 2018
- He caught 17 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns in two games to start 2019
- One of those opponents was the Oklahoma Sooners
- We've barely seen him since due to injury
