While it is clear that all of the news this week of movement between the Big 12 and SEC is going to cause a huge shift in college sports, there are some potential advantages for a handful of conference foes of the Texas basketball program specifically. The Big 12 tends to be a stronger men’s hoops conference than it is for football, and that will impact how the conference realignment plays out this time around.
With the potential of the Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners leaving the Big 12 for the SEC becoming more and more of a reality it seems with each passing day (sometimes even each passing hour), it feels like other teams in the conference are already seeking out the next move. Texas and Oklahoma were the athletic programs that definitely propped up the Big 12 financially since the last round of conference realignment.

But so much of that financial boost from Texas and Oklahoma for the Big 12 was provided by generic brand power and the respective football programs. Men’s basketball tended to be one exception of where Texas and Oklahoma were drivers of financial success in the Big 12.
Other programs tended to be the biggest drivers of financial success in men’s (and occasionally women’s basketball) basketball in the Big 12. So it is worth taking a look at which programs could actually benefit in men’s hoops by the move from these two football powers to leave the Big 12 for the SEC.
