The Cavaliers, according to Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer, were among the teams that “showed interest” in trading for 76ers forward Ben Simmons.
Here’s what Fishcer wrote:
Cleveland, Indiana, Minnesota, Sacramento and Toronto all showed interest in acquiring the runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year, sources said. Multiple executives from those teams, when contacted by B/R, mentioned their excitement at incorporating Simmons as a play-making forward—not at the point guard position he’s played in Philadelphia.
This isn’t much of a surprise. The Cavs are in a spot where there is pressure to get better in the near future and, despite his limitations, Simmons is a caliber of talent not currently on the Cavs’ roster. If Cleveland were able to nab him, you could make a real argument that he’s worth the risk and worth putting the work in to rehabilitate.
The biggest question here, and it’s not really answerable, is how the Cavs view Simmons on the court and how much they’d be willing to give up to get him. The offer, for salary reasons, would have to involve Kevin Love, probably include Collin Sexton and picks. Is that an offer template that really does it for the 76ers? I’m not so sure.
