One of the top high-major scorers in NCAA Basketball last season was Marcus Carr, who led Minnesota with 19.4 ppg and 4.9 apg and was awarded All-Big Ten honors. The 6’2 point guard is an explosive scorer, scoring in double figures in 26 of 29 games last season, and had four games of at least 30 points, including a career-high 41 points in a loss at Nebraska.
Carr was a former four-star prospect who started his career with the Pittsburgh Panthers. But after a brutal first year that included going 0-18 in ACC play, the point guard transferred to Minnesota and had to sit out a year.
As a junior, Carr averaged 15.4 ppg and 6.5 apg and displayed a great playmaking ability. He had a 35-point game against Ohio State but his best game as a college player may have been when he went for 21 points and 12 assists in a win against Michigan.
Carr is an outstanding scorer who put up great numbers with a somewhat subpar supporting cast. But questions about his efficiency and defensive desire made him not a guarantee to get drafted to the NBA. He had already entered the transfer portal after the Gophers made a head coaching change and now that he left the draft, Carr now becomes the biggest free-agent name not named Jalen Duren.
Considering the complete roster overhaul and the likelihood that they’ll finish around last in the Big Ten, the odds are low that Carr will return to Minnesota next season. So then where will the all-conference caliber guard end up?
