Rockies’ road woes continue in loss to Milwaukee that completes three-game sweep - The Denver Post

Alice Cooper once explained the meaning behind the name “Milwaukee” in the movie “Wayne’s World.”

It’s actually pronounced “Mil-e-wah-que,” according to the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, which is Algonquin for “the good land.”

The Rockies would like to request another translation.

Because there was little that was good about their visit to the banks of Lake Michigan — a three-game sweep that ended with a 5-0 loss Sunday afternoon at American Family Field.

Then again, the Rockies have had to search far and wide to find anything redeeming about their trips away from LoDo this season. At 6-31, they are easily the worst road team in Major League Baseball. And despite pregame talk from shortstop Trevor Story that perhaps the Rockies were turning the corner on their road woes during this recent five-game trip, the bottom line results (1-4) seemed to dispel that notion.

The Rockies’ starters did their job throughout the road trip with a 1.55 ERA. Instead, it was the bullpen that wore the dunce cap, giving up 17 earned runs and seven home runs over 14 1/3 innings (10.67 ERA).

“The inconsistency of the bullpen has showed up here in Milwaukee with three starts that as we went into the latter part of the game, each game was such where it could’ve went either way,” said Rockies manager Bud Black. “So we’ve got to tighten some things up in the bullpen and hopefully string some things together and get the big hit.”

Hits of any kind eluded Colorado on Sunday against Milwaukee southpaw Eric Lauer and the Brewers bullpen.

The Rockies had just four singles and struck out 10 times. It was the 11th time Colorado was shut out on the road this season.

“We’ve got to do a better job plain and simple of generating offense on the road,” Black said.

Things began to unravel in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Brewers plated four runs on three hits and a pair of walks for a 5-0 lead.

Rookie left-hander Lucas Gilbreath was unable to record an out after replacing starter Chi Chi Gonzalez to begin the inning. Following a Luis Urias lead-off single, catcher Omar Narvaez drilled a 3-2 pitch over the right-field wall for a two-run homer. Gilbreath was pulled after walking the next batter, but his replacement, Justin Lawrence, was punished following a two-out walk when Keston Hiura laced a 2-1 sinker to the right-center gap for a two-run double.

Things could have been even worse for the bullpen and Yency Almonte in the bottom of the eighth if not for a sliding catch from right fielder Yonathan Daza on a Hiura line drive that ultimately stranded two runners.

As it was, Gonzalez (2-5) took the loss though he allowed just one earned run on 91 pitches (56 strikes) over five innings.

“The scoreboard tells you all you need to know about the game,” Gonzalez said, trying to deflect blame from the bullpen. “I got to 91 pitches in five innings, so they got my pitch count up. That’s kind of my danger zone once I get to 100 pitches, so that’s something a little better I should’ve done and could do, is be more efficient.”

The right-hander faced the minimum through the first two frames despite a four-pitch lead-off walk in the second inning. Hiura smashed a 1-2 fastball into the left-field bleachers for a 1-0 Brewers lead in the third.

“His pitch mix played today — the fastball, the slider, the cut fastball, a few changeups, he moved the ball around the strike zone, changed speeds and hit spots,” Black said.

Lauer tossed six scoreless innings on 87 pitches.
