Community Spotlight: Back gun laws that make sense - The Edwardsville Intelligencer

tebagbagasi.blogspot.com

The U.S. House of Representatives approved $25 million in federal research funding to study gun violence. The money was to be split between the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Senate has yet to take any action, in spite of overwhelming support from the public to ban assault weapons. The League of Women Voters has a long history of working with state officials and law enforcement agencies to educate the public of the dangers of gun violence and to provide recommendations towards gun reform.

Gun safety reform must include the following five components:

1-Providing universal background checks. Background checks have been proven effective where they are in force. We encourage the Senate to pass S42 the Background Check Expansion Act.

2-Closing gun show loopholes. Currently, 40% of gun sales are completed without a background check.

3-Banning assault weapons and limiting magazine size limits. This is a common-sense solution to saving lives.

4-Increasing penalties for straw purchase of guns. Straw purchase of guns is a federal crime and penalties should be increased to deter such practices.

5-Funding research and reporting of gun violence. The House has passed a bill. It is not time for the Senate to act.

Thoughts and prayers are not enough. Now is the time to pass common sense gun reform and safety legislation. Action is needed to save innocent lives.

JoAnn Nabe is currently the Co-President of the League of Women Voters of the Edwardsville branch. She has been in the league for 40 plus years. She resides in Edwardsville.
