Quail Hollow Club in suburban Charlotte has been a fairly regular stop on the PGA Tour since 1969. It was the site of the 2017 PGA Championship and future site of the 2022 President's Cup. This week, it will host the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship, which tees off on Thursday. It's a golf course of considerable esteem and that's a big reason why 10 of the top 15 players in the Official World Golf Ranking are scheduled to play. No. 2 Justin Thomas and No. 3 Jon Rahm are separated by just over six hundredths of a point and both are in the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship field.
Thomas won the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow and he's listed as the 10-1 favorite in the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship odds from William Hill Sportsbook with Rahm just behind him at 12-1. Bryson DeChambeau (16-1), Rory McIlroy (18-1), Xander Schauffele (18-1) and Viktor Hovland (20-1) are the other contenders with odds of 20-1 or shorter. The model's top 2021 Wells Fargo Championship predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the Wells Fargo Championship 2021: DeChambeau, the third-favorite at 16-1, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top five. DeChambeau is just one of two golfers who've won multiple events on tour this season, claiming the 2020 US Open and the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational. But he's coming off back-to-back poor performances and finished outside the top 40 in his last two tournaments.
DeChambeau leads the PGA Tour in driving distance for the second year in a row, but his putting has dropped off considerably this season. He ranked among the top 10 in strokes gained via putting last season but now is a pedestrian 38th on tour. That drop-off will put him at a disadvantage at Quail Hollow Club as it has many crowned greens with firm surfaces, making putting a challenge. Don't be swayed by DeChambeau's work off the tee as other parts of his game should keep him from the top of the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship leaderboard.
Another surprise: Webb Simpson, a 25-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The 35-year-old calls Charlotte home, and even though he hasn't won at Quail Hollow, he's had a lot of success there.
Simpson was the runner-up to McIlroy in 2015 and he also had a fourth-place finish there in the 2012 Wells Fargo Championship and three other top-25 finishes. The veteran has five top-20 finishes in eight starts in 2021 and he ranks 13th on tour in total strokes gained (1.516) this season. He ranks fifth on tour in driving accuracy (71.1 percent) and 11th in greens in regulation (70.1 percent) and a good ball striking week should have him toward the top of the leaderboard again.
