A day after leaving one of Britain’s most popular breakfast shows, broadcaster Piers Morgan has said he stands by his disparaging coverage of Meghan Markle and still doesn’t believe “a word” she says after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex dropped a series of shocking allegations about the Royal Family during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Key Facts
In an interview outside his London home Wednesday morning, Morgan confirmed he had left Good Morning Britain, one of the U.K.’s most-watched breakfast shows, after storming off set when confronted by a co-host over his disparaging coverage of Meghan Markle.
In the bombshell interview, Meghan raised issues of racism and said she had felt suicidal when working as a member of the Royal Family.
"I don't believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth,” Morgan said Wednesday, defending an earlier comment that he "didn't believe a word" the Duchess said.
"I think it's fair to say, although the woke crowd will think that they've canceled me, I think they will be rather disappointed when I re-emerge."
Morgan said he is “always in talks with people,” describing his present situation as "a temporary hibernation."
The U.K.’s broadcasting regulator, Ofcom, received more than 40,000 complaints about Morgan’s comments on Monday and Buckingham Palace said the Queen is “saddened” by the Sussex’s experiences and is taking the issues raised, “particularly that of race... very seriously.”
Crucial Quote
Morgan also took to Twitter Wednesday to reaffirm that “freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on.” He included a quote from Winston Churchill: “Some people’s idea of free speech is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone says anything back, that is an outrage.”
Key Background
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey has plunged the British Royal Family into crisis mode. The week leading up to the interview saw high tensions between Harry and Meghan and Buckingham Palace. On Wednesday, Buckingham Palace announced it would investigate a report in London newspaper the Times that Megan bullied Kensington Palace staff, an allegation Meghan called “an attack on her character” and denied. In the interview which aired Sunday, Markle said she felt suicidal while she and husband Harry were still senior working members of the Royal Family and was not allowed to seek treatment by a senior person of the institution, with the Duke admitting racism “was a large part of” the reason why they left the U.K. Morgan, one of the most prominent critics of the couple, criticized Markle over the Oprah interview in part by saying: “I think the damage she's done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible.”
What To Watch For
Ofcom is reportedly investigating the episode after tens of thousands of complaints regarding Morgan’s conduct.
