HEBRON, Ky. — A local company has started testing an autonomous vehicle at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport which would transport luggage from the airport terminal to the plane.
ThorDrive, an autonomous technology development company, has retrofitted a luggage cart with cameras, computers and other software so it knows when to stop, go, turn and more.
"We intend to have this proof of concept developed to a sale-able product by the end of next year," Eddie Shelton, ThorDrive's vice president of business development, said. "Then through several of our partners that we work with have identified over the next year what the next vehicles that we'll make autonomous are."
Officials at CVG think this is the first project of its kind in North America, and they said it will take some getting used to.
"We've heard of autonomous vehicles that actually operate as snow plows, or purpose built vehicles that are not on existing platforms that are moving baggage to and from," Brian Cobb, CVG's chief innovation officer, said. "Those are on pilot testing levels. Nothing to this scale."
