The Rays' move that backfired in Game 6 - Houston Chronicle

When Rays manager Kevin Cash pulled Blake Snell in the fifth inning, the Rays starter didn’t look too happy.

Snell had allowed a walk to Yuli Gurriel and a single to Aledmys Díaz to start the inning as the Rays were holding a 1-0 lead.

Cash, looking to finish off the series, opted to go to his closer, Diego Castillo, to get out of the jam and then presumably count on the rest of his bullpen to win Game 6.

Instead, the Astros pieced together four runs to take control of the game and perhaps the series.

“Even with the walk and the ground ball (single), I felt confident I would get through that inning,” Snell said. “It’s just frustrating. I wanted to go deep in the ball game. I was confident with what I had going.”

Cash thought it was the right move.

“That was the most pivotal moment when they got 1st and 2nd on him.” Cash said. “I thought Diego was guy to calm that situation down. Trusted him to do what he had done all season. That was gut-wrenching.”

Now Playing:

As Martín Maldonado dropped a rare sacrifice bunt, then George Springer sent a single through the shift, it started to fall apart. José Altuve followed with a double and it was 3-1. By the time the inning ended, it was 4-1.

“Frustrating to say the least,” Snell said. “I was confused for sure (by the decision). Cash is really good at his job and gets it right a lot. I’m going to disagree (at times.)

“I take a lot of that on my shoulders. Frustrating that Diego had to rush to get ready to get in game. Diego is damn good but give me a chance to get out of it. With how I was pitching, felt like that would have been what is best. Again, Cash is usually right in those things.”

Rays catcher Mike Zunino understood the move.

“I would say when you look at our bullpen, how we work, guys understand that,” he said. “We moved pieces right all year. The situation dictated it, just didn’t work out in our favor.

“George did a good job beating the shift. That’s baseball.”
