Travelling with hand luggage only is a great way of saving money. However, in the age of COVID-19, it carries a new unexpected risk.
“You might find it helpful to carry a small bottle of disinfectant spray to use on your carry-on luggage, travel blanket or pillow,” the expert recommended.
“Make sure the bottle does not exceed 100ml to ensure it’s safe to transport in your hand luggage. You can easily decant some of your at-home disinfectants into small travel-size bottles.”
He added: “This is also handy if you wish to sanitise any seating areas or tables that you’ll be using on your journey."
Even if you have used disinfecting spray on your possessions, however, cleanliness should be of utmost importance even after your journey has ended.
“Be vigilant when using a travel pillow, travel blanket or touching your hand luggage, as all of these items can come into close contact with your face,” said Mr Dimitrov.
“Make sure you’ve washed your travel pillow and travel blankets on a hot wash with some washing-machine safe disinfectant included in the rinse cycle before you travel.
“Avoid using your travel pillow or blanket outside of the aeroplane or airport, as this reduces the risk of them coming into contact with the virus.
“When it comes to hand luggage - as with the suitcase - spritz it all over with some disinfectant both before and after your trip.
“Wash your hands as frequently as possible in between carrying your luggage, particularly if you’re taking it through busy town centres and train stations.”
Travellers should also be conscious of the best way to clean their suitcase, as COVID-19 is found to survive for longer on certain surfaces.
“The general consensus is that coronavirus can live on hard surfaces for up to three to four days, so it’s important to clean your suitcase before leaving the house and upon your return,” explained Mr Dimitrov.
“Spray your suitcase with some disinfectant without rinsing it off.
“If the outer part of your suitcase is fabric, spray liberally and let it soak in.
“If it’s plastic, use a clean tissue to work in the solution.
“Be sure to spray the handles too."
