CLEVELAND, Ohio — Airport security agents seized guns from passengers’ luggage at three times the rate in 2020 when compared with last year, official said.
Nationwide, aents found 15.3 guns per million people through July 2020, compared with 5.1 guns per million during the same time frame in 2019, according to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.
The number of travelers searched is down 75 percent, according to TSA spokesman Sonny Lorrius. Eighty percent of the guns found so far were loaded.
Lorrius said the TSA does not keep a running tally of guns seized nationally.
Someone with a loaded gun in their bags could face civil fines starting at $2,050 for an unloaded gun and $4,100 for a loaded gun. That can increase to $10,250 per violation, depending on the circumstances.
In Ohio, someone could be charged with carrying a concealed weapon, a fourth-degree felony.
Lorrius said seven guns, including two in July, have been seized so far at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, compared with 26 last year.
One gun has been seized so far from Akron-Canton Airport, compared with three last year.
Passengers are allowed to bring guns with them in checked luggage, but they must be unloaded, packaged in a hard-sided case separate from ammunition and declared during airline check-in.
