Rimowa’s Latest Colors Make Us Want to Shop for Luggage Again - Condé Nast Traveler

This year has hardly been one for suitcases. With no flights to hop on come March, our need for luggage was largely put on pause. And while far-flung vacations are still on hold, as we creep back out into the world to reconnect with family on road trips, or start to seriously consider a once-in-a-lifetime trip (the kind that takes a year of planning), news of Rimowa's latest limited-edition luggage collection is welcome. Especially since it's inspired by one of those dreamy places you might hope to visit once it's safe to do so: the Mojave Desert.

On August 20, the 120-year-old brand dropped two new seasonal colors for the Rimowa Essential collection, which encompasses a carry-on bag (the Cabin, $640), checked bag (the Check-In L, $820), and an even larger trunk (the Trunk Plus, $1,020). The colors are the most subdued, natural shades in Rimowa's current offering, which has shades from matte black to candy-colored coral and a deep berry purple. Both draw on the landscape you'd find in Joshua Tree or Death Valley: Desert Rose is a dusty pink made to look like the southwest's pastel sunsets, and Cactus is a deep moss green, the kind you'd see on a succulent or, well, cacti. They're the soothing colors we want to see right now—helpful, if you plan to only use your suitcase as decor for the time being—and yet are neutral enough to use for years to come. They also complement each other well, meaning you could easily mix and match the colors and sizes.

All three bags are made of Rimowa's signature polycarbonate material, with the brand's hallmark parallel grooves on either side, and have silent, sturdy black wheels and a sleek, curved handle that will feel nice in your hand and extends and closes with ease. The material means they're lightweight, too: the largest bag, the Trunk Plus, weighs just under 12 pounds and is deeper and slightly taller than the Check-In L, which weights 10.6 pounds. The smallest, the Cabin, clocks in at 7.1 pounds. Each one has a TSA-friendly lock, and inside, two flex dividers with zipper pouches and adjustable straps to hold down your belongings on either side.

For those who love to match—or want something in the new desert-inspired colors, but aren't in the market for a new suitcase—the two hues can be found on Rimowa's polycarbonate phone cases ($90), too. They're only made for the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Max, but will keep those phones plenty secure thanks to a shockproof TPU shell. And for some added flair to your existing suitcase, the desert sticker set ($50) plays up a 1970s aesthetic with five sun, cactus, and tie-dye covered decals spelling out phrases like, “Empty spaces are filled with imagination.” Don't we know it.
