Self-service luggage kiosks are officially up and running at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). However, the option isn't available to all travelers flying out of the airport. The self-service kiosks have been installed on a trial basis in the lobby of the Tom Bradley International Terminal. Travelers will find the kiosks at Aisle B and Aisle C.
Passengers flying with Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, Scandinavian, Norwegian and Asiana are all eligible to use the self-service kiosks at LAX. We also know that the kiosks will be upgraded to accommodate passengers flying with British Airways, Korean Airlines, Air France/KLM and several other airlines in the months to come. People who fly out of LAX frequently may know that Alaska Airlines and United Airlines already offer similar kiosks at the hub.
How do the new self-service kiosks at LAX work? The kiosks print out luggage tags for passengers. This makes it possible for passengers to simply drop off their bags on a conveyor belt without the need to make stops at ticketing counters. However, staff members will still be standing by to ensure that customers can receive help if any issues arise. Passengers with bags that are too large or too heavy will be directed to ticketing counters to have their bags checked by airline employees the traditional way.
LAX intends to test its new self-service kiosks during the next few months. Officials will be monitoring the new kiosks for success rates, failure rates and processing times. There have been hints that the kiosks will be upgraded with biometric technology if the program proves to be successful.
