What is a vampire straw? A closer look at the weapon confiscated from a Boston traveler's luggage - CNN

A man was arrested earlier this month at Boston Logan International Airport for allegedly carrying a “vampire straw” in his carry-on luggage.

While the name of the device summons thoughts of Dracula and blood-sucking bats, the straws actually have nothing to do with vampires. Here’s what you need to know about the multi-use, self-defense tool.

What is a vampire straw?

The term “vampire straw” is used to refer to a titanium straw with a pointed edge. Massachusetts police told CNN the straw confiscated from the traveler had been purchased from Szabo Inc., which sells titanium vampire straws for $85.

The straw has multiple uses, according to Szabo’s product listing. It “allows the user to drink effortlessly any thick shake or smoothie.” But it’s also “designed for self defense” and is “long enough to be used like a dagger.”

The listing notes the straw can be easily carried in public “without attracting attention” and can also be used to deflate tires. The straw’s “chiseled tip is sharp enough to puncture most synthetic materials,” says the listing.

Szabo did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment.

Several other companies also advertise titanium straws for self-defense.

Are vampire straws legal?

The legality of carrying a vampire straw depends on local knife laws, the TSA’s New England office told CNN in an email.

In Massachusetts, where the man was arrested, it is illegal to carry certain “edged instruments,” including stilettos and daggers, the state police told CNN. State troopers and TSA found that the straw “fit that category,” police said. Violators can be given a fine or sentenced to up to five years in prison if they have prior felony charges.

Additionally, the TSA prohibits carrying most sharp objects in carry-on luggage.

Sometimes checked bags are lost. Sometimes they’re stolen from baggage claim, which is why Apple AirTags have become so popular. But sometimes items from your luggage go missing between the time you check it in with the airline and the time is arrives at the other end of your trip.

When you check a bag with an airline, the airline is responsible for the bag even though they aren’t the only one that touches it. You may have seen the slips that TSA sometimes sticks into bags saying that they’ve opened and inspected it.

One woman shared her story of flying Delta from New York JFK to Los Angeles, only to discover that her bag had been opened and one of her packing cubes removed. The only thing taken was the packing cube with her panties. Ewwww.

It’s difficult to pinpoint who is to blame, which is why when there is more than one airline on your itinerary, it’s the last airline before your destination that is responsible for it even if it was lost or damaged along the way by a different airline.

Surely there were more valuable items in this woman’s luggage than underwear, but there are subcommunities all over the internet where they probably do command a premium. The underwear will probably be harder to identify than when a TSA employee stole a CNN camera and forgot to remove the cable network’s stickers before selling it on eBay.

When it comes to what to pack in a carry-on, every inch counts and every item should pull its weight. At the core of it all, the more organization you’ve got, the better. Packing cubes, use-specific cases and organizers, and bags with thoughtful compartments and easy-access openings will make your trip much easier.

Bring 24-hour essentials

Be sure to pack any essentials you can’t go a day without in your carry-on luggage. This includes any chargers, valuables, makeup and skincare basics, toothbrushes, hair accessories, and even an extra outfit (extra points if it’s versatile), just in case you end up with only your carry-on luggage. Whether you’re solely packing carry-on bags or you’re checking luggage, you’ll also want any essentials you’ll need to get your hands on during the flight, such as snacks, moisturizer, lip balm, and entertainment options.

Don’t forget to pack necessary medication

If you’ve got any prescription medication or think you may need to rely on a certain type of medicine during your trip (not just the plane), be sure to pack it in your carry-on luggage. It’ll avoid trouble in case any checked luggage doesn’t make it to your final destination. Best place for anything you’ll need in transit?
