Scientists aren't trained to mentor. That's a problem - Science Magazine

tebagbagasi.blogspot.com

Throughout most of grad school, I was impressed by how thoroughly unimportant I was to the people running the labs I worked in. I didn’t expect to have best-buds-on-a-road-trip relationships with my advisers, but I didn’t realize I’d pretty much be thought of as Training Grant Expenditure Number Eight. Day one in a lab usually felt like this:

ME: My mind is open; I am yours to educate! Illuminate the corridors of scientific wonder, and be my true guide as you train me in your ways.

MY ADVISER: Here’s a stack of journal articles. See you in a week.

Yet that’s what an adviser is, at least etymologically: someone who provides advice. Not guidance, not teaching, just … advice.

In other words, we sometimes draw a false equivalence between research advisers and mentors. And while many advisers are excellent mentors, it’s not exactly a prerequisite for running a lab.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Back in the days when traveling and audiences both existed, I gave the keynote address at an event for HSI STEM Impact, a program for undergraduate science students at Texas State University. It’s a pretty remarkable program: Not only does it support students navigating their first experience working in a lab, but it also includes mandatory mentorship training for the professors who run those labs.

Why is this remarkable? Because most professors receive exactly zero minutes of mentorship training—and at most universities, that’s just kind of the end of the story. Your principal investigator (PI) doesn’t know what to do with you? Yeah, they’re like that sometimes.

But not at Texas State. Looking around the lecture hall, I saw undergrads eager to participate in research, and I saw professors who were happy to facilitate that research. But most importantly, I saw a program, funded and sanctioned and promoted by the university, that gave the green light to professors to participate. It told the professors, “The university wants you to be mentors—and we’ll provide the support to help you do it well.”

Programs like this, offering various types of mentorship training, exist at other institutions, too—but still, they’re hardly the norm. Why don’t more schools and programs provide training for faculty to be better mentors? Why don’t they prioritize carving out time for this sort of activity? Why do they just kind of throw everyone to the wolves and see what happens?

You’d think graduate programs would be trying to outdo one another with the quality of the mentorship they offer. But then you’d be forgetting that the lifeblood of a science program isn’t happy trainees—it’s grants. Professors can even be told that their job is less secure because they’ve invested too much time and energy working with students, and it’s detracting from their primary role as grant-getters. After all, grant money is a tangible and necessary fuel for university science departments, while mentorship can neither be quantified nor spent on a shiny new endowed provost.

“Professor Diligent, don’t get us wrong,” an administrator will say. “We appreciate that you’ve worked hard to ensure your students have a productive and enjoyable experience training in your lab. But unless one of those students wants to give you $3 million, you should really refocus your efforts. Does … one of those students want to give you $3 million?”

Not only are the incentives for good mentoring misaligned, but some professors are actively disinterested in mentoring students, focusing more on research and relegating the day-to-day hand-holding to whichever postdoc draws the short straw. Others would love to be good mentors but don’t exactly know how—and don’t have easy access to training opportunities that would help.

The whole situation might not be so embarrassing if universities didn’t tout the opportunities for students to work with top-notch researchers so strongly: “Train with our world-class professors! Rub elbows with greatness! Latch onto a future Nobel laureate, open wide, and catch the crumbs!” Then you join a lab, and the trainer to whom you’re apprenticed for the next five to *cough cough* years has neither the desire nor the ability to support trainees. Oops!

This status quo has been accepted for far too long. For the sake of the next generation of students (and, to the extent that well-mentored researchers produce better research, for the sake of the advisers, too) it’s time for a change. It’s time we made science mentorship training more commonplace, or even—dare I say it—mandatory.

Before you professors get your mortarboards in a twist, I hear you. I know you don’t have time for yet another university-mandated obligation. More importantly, I understand that a lot of these training sessions, especially the university-mandated ones, are vague clouds of word fluff. Believe me, I’ve been trapped in plenty of uninformative PowerPoint-based discourses about “engagement” or “implementing deliverables” or “why it was wrong to say that about the dean when you thought you were on mute.”

But that’s not a reason to jettison the whole idea. Not all university-mandated training is bad; only bad university-mandated training is bad. With a little time and effort, surely administrators can figure out how to offer trainings that will benefit everyone. (Well, almost everyone—training probably won’t reform those legitimately horrible advisers that make their trainees’ lives nightmares, but let’s at least start somewhere.)

Simply put, any PI who holds students’ fates in their hands should receive training in mentorship. It may take a village to raise a child (and after 5 months quarantined at home with my kids, I’d be happy to send them to wherever that village is). But it takes a scientist to train a scientist. And it takes a university to officially, without the wink-wink-but-seriously-go-get-grant-money, encourage and train professors to do so. Even if it isn’t the most important aspect of their job to them, for the students working under them, it’s everything.

Scientists use genomics to discover an ancient dog species that may teach us about human vocalization - National Institutes of Health

tebagbagasi.blogspot.com

News Release

Monday, August 31, 2020

The finding marks a new effort in conserving an ancient dog breed, with potential to inform human vocalization processes

In a study published in PNAS, researchers used conservation biology and genomics to discover that the New Guinea singing dog, thought to be extinct for 50 years, still thrives. Scientists found that the ancestral dog population still stealthily wanders in the Highlands of New Guinea. This finding opens new doors for protecting a remarkable creature that can teach biologists about human vocal learning. The New Guinea singing dog can also be utilized as a valuable and unique animal model for studying how human vocal disorders arise and finding potential treatment opportunities. The study was performed by researchers at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health, Cenderawasih University in Indonesia, and other academic centers.

The New Guinea singing dog was first studied in 1897, and became known for their unique and characteristic vocalization, able to make pleasing and harmonic sounds with tonal quality. Only 200–300 captive New Guinea singing dogs exist in conservation centers, with none seen in the wild since the 1970s.

"The New Guinea singing dog that we know of today is a breed that was basically created by people," said Elaine Ostrander, Ph.D., NIH Distinguished Investigator and senior author of the paper. "Eight were brought to the United States from the Highlands of New Guinea and bred with each other to create this group."

According to Dr. Ostrander, a large amount of inbreeding within captive New Guinea singing dogs changed their genomic makeup by reducing the variation in the group's DNA. Such inbreeding is why the captive New Guinea singing dogs have most likely lost a large number of genomic variants that existed in their wild counterparts. This lack of genomic variation threatens the survival of captive New Guinea singing dogs. Their origins, until recently, had remained a mystery.

Another New Guinea dog breed found in the wild, called the Highland Wild Dog, has a strikingly similar physical appearance to the New Guinea singing dogs. Considered to be the rarest and most ancient dog-like animal in existence, Highland Wild Dogs are even older than the New Guinea singing dogs.

Researchers previously hypothesized that the Highland Wild Dog might be the predecessor to captive New Guinea singing dogs, but the reclusive nature of the Highland Wild Dog and lack of genomic information made it difficult to test the theory.

In 2016, in collaboration with the University of Papua, the New Guinea Highland Wild Dog Foundation led an expedition to Puncak Jaya, a mountain summit in Papua, Indonesia. They reported 15 Highland Wild Dogs near the Grasberg Mine, the largest gold mine in the world.

A follow-up field study in 2018 allowed researchers to collect blood samples from three Highland Wild Dogs in their natural environment as well as demographic, physiological and behavioral data.

NHGRI staff scientist Heidi Parker, Ph.D., led the genomic analyses, comparing the DNA from captive New Guinea singing dogs and Highland Wild Dogs.

"We found that New Guinea singing dogs and the Highland Wild Dogs have very similar genome sequences, much closer to each other than to any other canid known. In the tree of life, this makes them much more related to each other than modern breeds such as German shepherd or bassett hound," Dr. Parker said.

According to the researchers, the New Guinea singing dogs and the Highland Wild Dogs do not have identical genomes because of their physical separation for several decades and due to the inbreeding among captive New Guinea singing dogs — not because they are different breeds.

In fact, the researchers suggest that the vast genomic similarities between the New Guinea singing dogs and the Highland Wild Dogs indicate that Highland Wild Dogs are the wild and original New Guinea singing dog population. Hence, despite different names, they are, in essence, the same breed, proving that the original New Guinea singing dog population are not extinct in the wild.

The researchers believe that because the Highland Wild Dogs contain genome sequences that were lost in the captive New Guinea singing dogs, breeding some of the Highland Wild Dogs with the New Guinea singing dogs in conservation centers will help generate a true New Guinea singing dogs population. In doing so, conservation biologists may be able to help preserve the original breed by expanding the numbers of New Guinea singing dogs.

"This kind of work is only possible because of NHGRI's commitment to promoting comparative genomics, which allows researchers to compare the genome sequences of the Highland Wild Dog to that of a dozen other canid species," Dr. Ostrander said.

Although New Guinea singing dogs and Highland Wild Dogs are a part of the dog species Canis lupus familiaris, researchers found that each contain genomic variants across their genomes that do not exist in other dogs that we know today.

"By getting to know these ancient, proto-dogs more, we will learn new facts about modern dog breeds and the history of dog domestication," Dr. Ostrander said. "After all, so much of what we learn about dogs reflects back on humans."

The researchers also aim to study New Guinea singing dogs in greater detail to learn more about the genomics underlying vocalization (a field that, to date, heavily relies on birdsong data). Since humans are biologically closer to dogs than birds, researchers hope to study New Guinea singing dogs to gain a more accurate insight into how vocalization and its deficits occur, and the genomic underpinnings that could lead to future treatments for human patients.

Airlines desperately need people to fly. That's why the top 3 US carriers are dumping change fees - CNN

tebagbagasi.blogspot.com
When the Covid-19 pandemic wiped out demand for air travel starting in March, the airlines responded by allowing passengers to change flight plans without paying fees. But those waived change fees have for the most part been temporary -- until Sunday, when United announced it was dropping most of its change fees for good.
"When we hear from customers about where we can improve, getting rid of this fee is often the top request," said United (UAL) CEO Scott Kirby. "Following previous tough times, airlines made difficult decisions to survive, sometimes at the expense of customer service. United Airlines won't be following that same playbook as we come out of this crisis."
It didn't take long for its two major rivals, Delta Air Lines (DAL) and American Airlines (AAL), to follow suit. Both announced Monday afternoon that they would permanently drop most change fees as well.
"We've said before that we need to approach flexibility differently than this industry has in the past, and today's announcement builds on that promise to ensure we're offering industry-leading flexibility, space and care to our customers," said Delta CEO Ed Bastian.
"American is offering more flexibility and ease than ever before, should travel plans change," said American's Chief Revenue Officer Vasu Raja.
Southwest (LUV), the fourth largest US airline, has never had change fees. According to industry experts, many other smaller airlines are likely to follow suit now that the big four that account for more than 80% of domestic air travel don't have the fees.
"This is a huge move," industry consultant Michael Boyd said after United's decision. "The other major airlines will have to follow suit."
Industrywide, change fees netted airlines $2.8 billion in 2019. Dropping the lucrative fees underscores that the balance of power between airlines and passengers rests firmly with customers today. That doesn't happen too often, noted Philip Baggaley, the chief credit analyst for airlines at Standard & Poor's.
The airlines are responding to the fact that a modest recovery in air travel at the start of summer started stalling out in July, Baggaley said. With the end of the summer travel season a week away, they had no choice but to throw in the towel on anything that might be keeping people from booking.
"The airlines are in a position where they are not generating a lot of revenue," said Helane Becker, airline analyst at Cowen. "If this gets people to book, that's a huge positive for them."
Becker said that most of the fees were paid by business travelers in the past, but most business travel remains grounded -- only about 5% of pre-Covid levels by her estimate.
"Even if you want to travel on business, I'm not sure that corporate clients want you in their office," she said.
And businesses have discovered they don't need as much air travel as they did in the past.
"The airlines want to retain as much traffic as they can from people who are otherwise willing to hit the Zoom and Skype button," said airline consultant Boyd.
So the airlines are more dependent on leisure travelers now than they have ever been. In the past, those leisure travelers might have been fairly certain about their travel plans, pegged to a holiday or vacation schedule. But now with new quarantine rules being imposed and restrictions on moving from one state to another, they no longer can make those certain plans.
"When times were good, the airlines wanted to have people think twice before they canceled," said Becker. "Now, [the end of change fees] this gives people confidence they can book, cancel and rebook."

Apple and Tesla are doing stock splits. Here's what that actually means to investors - CNBC

tebagbagasi.blogspot.com

FREDERIC J. BROWN | AFP | Getty Images

Two of the most valuable and popular public companies – Apple and Tesla – completed stock splits on Monday. Wondering what that entails? And what, if anything, it means for your investments?

Let's start with how the process of a corporate stock split works.

Every publicly traded company has a number of stocks, or shares, that make up its total value. The combined worth of Apple's stock reached more than $2 trillion earlier in August. Tesla, meanwhile, is valued at over $400 billion.

When a company splits its stock, its total value doesn't change; it just ends up with more stocks, each at a cheaper cost.

Here's a food metaphor: If you ask the guy at the pizzeria to cut each slice in your large pie in half, you'll still go home with the same amount of pizza. You just have more, smaller slices now.

More from Your Money, Your Future:
Trump's payroll tax would 'terminate' Social Security, critics say

Why college students might get less financial aid next year

Companies typically say they're splitting their stocks to make them affordable to more people.

But, is that reality? It's more of a way to grab headlines and bring in money, said certified financial planner Douglas Boneparth, founder and president of Bone Fide Wealth in New York.

"This was done as a marketing tool to get smaller investors to invest in the stock," Boneparth said. "The actual mechanics of the company are the same."

And therefore, so are your chances of making a profit on either Tesla or Apple, experts say.

"People ultimately want to know, 'What does this mean for my bottom line?'" Boneparth said. "The answer is: nothing."

If you own Apple in an index fund, for example, it's as if you had a dollar that just turned into four quarters, Boneparth said.

Apple is splitting each of its stocks into four, and Tesla five.

Still, people can seduced by the suddenly lower prices.

Not so fast, experts say.

Just because you can buy the stock now doesn't mean you're getting more value than you could before the split, said Stacy Francis, a CFP and president and CEO of Francis Financial.

If you can buy one Apple stock after the split, for example, remember that that singular stock is now one-fourth the value of what it would have been worth before the split — and why you paid one-fourth the price.

This was done as a marketing tool to get smaller investors to invest in the stock.
Douglas Boneparth
founder and president of Bone Fide Wealth in New York

The math is, of course, the same if you already owned the stock when the split occurred.

"A two-for-one stock split means that for every share of the stock you owned before the split, now you own two," Francis said. "While you have two shares instead of one, the value of each share is half."

History tells us that a company's performance is unpredictable in the wake of its split.

For example, when Apple split in 2014, it spiked by nearly 40% for the year. Yet after its split in 2000, it was down 60%.

Tesla and Apple stock were up on Monday, but that doesn't mean much, said Allan Roth, founder of financial advisory firm Wealth Logic.

"In the long-run, [they] will be driven by the fundamentals of the companies and the splits will have no bearing on long-term performance," Roth said.

Here's more evidence that stock splits are more about headlines than your bottom line: These days you don't even need to be able to buy a company's entire stock to own it, and go along for its ride of ups and downs.

Many brokerage firms like Fidelity and Charles Schwab allow people to buy portions of a stock, known as fractional shares, Boneparth said, further showing that "stock splits mean absolutely nothing."

The idea that the process allows more people to buy the stock is, he said, "a moot point when fractional stocks exist." Before Monday, he said, "U.S. investors could have bought fractional shares of Tesla or Apple for $5 or $10."

WHO warns that 'no country can just pretend the pandemic is over' - CNBC

tebagbagasi.blogspot.com

The World Health Organization urged countries Monday to continue implementing safety measures to control the spread of the coronavirus, such as limiting public gatherings and protecting vulnerable groups as they try to reopen businesses and services.

"The more control countries have over the virus, the more they can open up. Opening up without having control is a recipe for disaster," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a virtual news briefing from the United Nations health agency's Geneva headquarters. "No country can just pretend the pandemic is over."

Tedros outlined "four essential things that all countries, communities and individuals must focus on to take control." He said countries should "prevent amplifying events," which he said many countries have linked to large gatherings at stadiums, nightclubs and places of worship. He added that countries and people can find "creative ways" to be social.

He added that countries should prevent deaths by protecting vulnerable people, including older people, people with underlying conditions and essential workers. This will help save lives and alleviate the burden on countries' health systems, Tedros said.

Tedros also said "individuals must play their part" by wearing masks, social distancing and washing their hands frequently. He added that governments can avoid stay-at-home orders by implementing targeted responses to outbreaks through testing, contact tracing and isolating.

"If countries are serious about opening up, they must be serious about suppressing transmission and saving lives," he said. "This may seem like an impossible balance, but it's not. It can be done and it has been done."

Tedros added that the WHO recently published guidance on how hotels, cargo ships and fishing vessels can safely resume operations as "part of our commitment to supporting every sector to reopen as safely as possible."

WHO officials said the so-called new normal will include at least some mitigation measures, such as social distancing and mask wearing. The WHO has previously said that such measures will likely need to be followed in many countries even after a vaccine is eventually brought to market.

Dozens of vaccine manufacturers have launched trials for their coronavirus vaccine candidates, according to the WHO, and at least two have started large phase three trials. Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Dr. Stephen Hahn said over the weekend that his agency would consider issuing an emergency use authorization for a vaccine before its phase three clinical trial is fully complete.

But Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, the World Health Organization's chief scientist, warned Monday that authorizing a vaccine too early and with too little data could create a variety of problems.

"The risk of approving a vaccine prematurely for us is that, first of all, it will make it very difficult to continue with randomized clinical trials," she said. "And secondly, there's a risk of introducing a vaccine that's been inadequately studied and might turn out to have a low efficacy, thereby not doing the job of bringing an end to this pandemic or even worse, have a safety profile that's not acceptable."

She added that the emergency use of a vaccine should be done "with a great deal of seriousness," particularly because it could lead to adverse side effects in some parts of the population. She added that the decision should be made using as much safety and efficacy data as is possible.

"Scientists around the world are united in a call for agencies and for companies, and most companies have supported this stance, that the approval of a vaccine must be based on data from phase three clinical trials," Swaminathan said.

Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO's health emergencies program, echoed Swaminathan in saying that collecting and monitoring vast amounts of data is crucial as nations start distributing vaccines to their general population. As the vaccine is introduced to larger and perhaps more diverse parts of the population, negative side effects could emerge, underscoring the importance of the collection of safety data.

"The difficulty and the the challenge with the vaccine is, at the moment, we're moving from vaccinating tens or hundreds of people to now vaccinating thousands of people," he said. "We need to get the safety and efficacy data from those studies. Because if you move too quickly to vaccinating millions or hundreds of millions or billions of people, we may miss certain adverse events that you won't pick up with smaller numbers so you need to maintain monitoring."

He added that there are strict regulations around emergency use of vaccines and drugs in the European Union and the U.S. as well as in parts of Africa and India. It's crucial that governments are led by their regulatory agencies, he said.

"Each country has a sovereign right to define its policy for vaccination or any other therapeutic intervention in its population, but it must be guided by the highest possible ethical standards, the highest possible scientific standards," he said.

Wespac Reconsiders Rule That Keeps Longliners From Fishing Near… - Honolulu Civil Beat

tebagbagasi.blogspot.com

Hawaii’s commercial fishing industry leaders are weighing whether to uphold the boundary that prohibits longline vessels from fishing within 50 miles of the main islands’ shores, a review that has some small-boat fishermen nervous.

Several of those operators, who fish closer to shore, pushed back against lifting the so-called “Longliner Exclusion Zone” during a virtual “Fishers Forum” held last week by the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council.

The zone has been in place for nearly 30 years and extends to 75 miles in some places. A Wespac flyer for the event solicited public input on whether it’s still needed.

That got the attention of local fishermen such as Chris Freed. “Why is this even happening?” the Oahu fisherman said during his testimony. Freed and other fishermen said they’d actually like to see the 50- to 75-mile boundary for longliners extended even farther.

Fishermen unload their catch of fish at Pier 38 in the early morning hours in Honolulu, HI, Tuesday, November 20, 2018. The fish were sold later that morning at the Honolulu Fish Auction, the anchor of the Commercial Fishing Village on Pier 38. (Civil Beat photo Ronen Zilberman)

Fishermen unload their catch  at Pier 38  in Honolulu. Wespac officials are reviewing a decades-old restriction on how close to shore longliner vessels can operate.

Ronen Zilberman/Civil Beat

Wespac officials said they’re not endorsing doing away with the zone. Rather, they have to review whether it’s still necessary every five years under federal law, they said.

“We’re mandated to do this,” Edwin Watamura, a vice-chair on the council, said Friday.

“It wasn’t about the council recommending that we get rid of the zone, by no means at all. It may have sounded that way in the announcement and the flyer, but I think if anything it was written that way for sensationalism to get people to join in on the conversation,” he added.

No longline operators testified during the meeting. The association representing that fleet of 145 or so vessels says it’s fine with keeping the long-standing exclusion zone.

The review wasn’t “anything we initiated,” Hawaii Longline Association Executive Director Eric Kingma said Sunday. “Quite frankly, we have much larger issues facing our fleet than that,” he said.

Top of the list is the dwindling local market for the longliners’ product amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Kingma said. The fleet also continues to face competition from foreign fishing fleets on the high seas outside Hawaii, he added.

Watamura said the zone within the islands was created after numerous longline vessels left the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean for Hawaiian waters in the 1990s. The influx sparked scuffles and confrontations with small-boat fishermen.

Longliners’ fishing lines can extend greater than 25 miles.

“They were setting them real close to the islands, like three miles out,” Watamura recalled of the early 1990s. “It’s a problem because they were setting their lines where we fish. There’s thousands of hooks.”

Nonetheless, Hawaii’s longliner feet typically chases bigeye tuna, a pelagic fish that draws them out past the zone boundary anyway, Watamura added.

Besides the exclusion zone around the Main Hawaiian Islands, longliners and other commercial fishing operations are prohibited from fishing within 200 miles of Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument shorelines. The marine sanctuary encompasses much of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

An additional “Southern Exclusion Zone” aims to protect false killer whales in the waters south of Hawaii. It’s triggered when longline fishing either kills or gravely injures two of the marine mammals there.

It’s not clear when Wespac will make a final decision on its review, but the exclusion zone is sure to come at the council’s Sept. 15 meeting, Watamura said.

Twitter Removes Claim About CDC And Covid-19 Coronavirus Deaths That Trump Retweeted - Forbes

MTV Video Music Awards viewers get punk'd in a ceremony that was anything but live - Minneapolis Star Tribune

tebagbagasi.blogspot.com

In the weeks leading up the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, the iconic network was super secretive about how it was going to pull off such an complicated event during a pandemic.

Now we know why. The ceremony, which aired Sunday on nearly a dozen channels, including the CW, was a largely pretaped event with all the spontaneity of a classic rock station.

Various publications have revealed that the Weeknd’s performance overlooking Manhattan’s Hudson Yards and Maluma’s appearance at Brooklyn’s Skyline Drive-In were recorded days earlier.

Some acceptance speeches leaked on social media before the start of the broadcast.

Page Six, the New York Post’s gossip column, reported that Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus didn’t even fly into the Big Apple, relying on green screen to hide the fact that they were actually performing and strutting the red carpet in Los Angeles.

The canned applause might as well have been lifted from a Tyler Perry sitcom. Lip-syncing solved the puzzle of how artists’ words would be understood through face masks.

Host Keke Palmer dedicated the show to Chadwick Boseman in a separate segment, suggesting that she did her opening monologue before the “Black Panther” actor’s death on Friday.

It’s understandable that MTV took some shortcuts this year. Plans to put on the event in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center were scrapped less than a month ago, forcing producers to improvise in a city still very much in lockdown mode.

They eventually hyped a show that would be peppered with performances from various outdoor locations throughout the five boroughs.

What they didn’t tell us was that they planned to pretty much ignore the “live” aspect of the show.

The lack of transparency left viewers spending a lot of time trying to figure out when they were being hoodwinked instead of celebrating the best in popular music.

There were certainly moments to hum about, even if they were mostly through elaborate videos that took the place of standard stage performances in front of screaming kids.

DaBaby made “Blind” a strong statement on police brutality with the rapper stomping on the roof of a police car as New York City burned in the background. Miley Cyrus paid homage to her past by swapping a wrecking ball for a disco ball in “Midnight Sky.” BTS showed why they are a certain generation’s answer to the Beatles with a peppy version of “Dynamite” from South Korea.

And then there was Gaga, who may or may not have been on location, but still ended up stealing the evening with a medley of hits that included a stint at the piano.

She turned her multiple acceptance speeches into pep talks aimed directly at her Little Monsters. She raided her entire wardrobe, sporting everything from an optical-illusion dress to a bondage bikini. Her breathless sermons may have been a little over the top, but at least she was making an effort.

The same couldn’t be said for winners Taylor Swift and H.E.R. who both phoned in their acceptance speeches from what appeared to be prison cells, robbing us of the chance to sneak a peek at what’s on their bookshelves.

Palmer, who spent a lot of hosting duties trying to match Kimberly Guilfoyle’s volume level at the Republican National Convention, contributed canned pieces from various NYC landmarks, including the Brooklyn Bridge and Times Square, tone-deaf bits that depended more on makeup artists than comedy writers.

The 27-year-old star may have been an attractive draw for younger viewers, but if there was ever a time to call up Tiffany Haddish for duty, this was it.

Officially, Gaga was the big winner with three major awards, including artist of the year and song of year, which she shared with her “Rain On Me” duet partner Grande.

She was also honored with the inaugural Tricon Award, which was either some of kind of lifetime achievement award or an excuse to see what Gaga would be like if she were ever cast in Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.”

Doja Cat, who seemed to be the most appreciative winner of the night, was named Best New Artist. Video of the Year went to “Blinding Lights” by the Weeknd.

There were also special categories created to reflect the times.

The Mayo Clinic doctors who went viral earlier this year with their version of “Imagine” were among those honored as “Everyday Heroes: Frontline Medical Workers,” but a winner was never announced, leaving viewers to assume that it was an honor just to be nominated.

Best Video at Home went to Justin Bieber and Grande. The fact that Grande didn’t pop on stage to take a bow in front an artificial audience was more evidence that the pop star was never really on the premises.

The evening’s biggest winner may be the Emmy Awards, which are scheduled to be handed out virtually on Sept. 20. Let’s hope host Jimmy Kimmel and his team picked up some valuable tips, not the least of which is making sure that their live event is actually live — and lively.
